Phoenix Youths

The youth teams are really the future of any club and if you take a trip to Phoenix on any given Monday afternoon.. The future of Phoenix looks bright. With over 100 kids showing up on at any given training session the abilities range from beginner to future Irish PRO. Like all Phoenix Club members, the youths are trained by the experienced hand of Dave Langford Smith and up-and-coming Barbadian Kirk Edwards. There are lots of other parents and Phoenix Club members on hand and the atmosphere is great.

Match Reports

A busy start for Phoenix Cricket Youth Section.. Our ever-growing youth section has commenced its seasons with more games played at this stage than all of last year’s very wet summer!

Under 15's

Phoenix V Merrion

Phoenix under 15's took some time off from their ark building classes today to play a cricket league game (unbelievable!). Due to holidays phoenix fielded a very young side ( one u15 three u13 and seven u11's) but having won the toss captain Vinay Kumar opted to let his young side loose in the field! Shaun Horan Suraj Tiripati, Vinay, Michael Fahy and Adam Chester all took wickets to reduce Merrion to 51 all out after just 18 overs! Phoenix got the runs with 5 wickets to spare with Eoin Cleere Michael Fahy and Vinay steering us home. The team were ruthless from one to eleven.....keep an eye on these names for the future: Vinay Kumar, Shaun Horan, Ihab Jameel, Michael Fahy, Adam Chester, Eoin Cleere, Surak Tiripati, Glen Foran, Jamie Cussen, Ben White & David Fahy! Well done guys on keeping the cricket fires burning.. in the midst of the monsooooooon!!!

Cup Final Match report

It has taken some time to file this report as some of us are still getting over the disappointment but here goes……

The day dawned cloudy and grey but there was tension in the air as the Under 11’s knew the day of the cup final had come.Their opponents were the mercurial lads from North County but our boys were up for the fight! In front of a great crowd of over 100 people all enjoying a great spectacle, and with the great ol’ lady herself looking resplendent with new bunting and even the MCC flag flying overhead the occasion lived up to its billing! North County won the toss and elected to field. The going was tough early on as after 10 overs Phoenix had 27 runs for the loss of one wicket. Some fine displays from Suraj Tirapati (26 not out) Glen Foran (25 not out) and Eoin Cleere (16 runs) laid a solid competitive score of 93 after 20 overs as North County’s target.

The bar had been humming all afternoon when Phoenix took to the field to try and defend their score and lift the cup. North County got off to a flyer and after 10 overs had reached 67. It was all over bar the shouting until the “never say die spirit” of the guys took hold! Led in the field by their captain Adam Chester who saved every run as if it was the last backed up by his team of bowlers including Dev Dismore who took 2 wickets for 7 runs, Craig Nicholson who took a wicket with his second ball (as is normal for Craig!) the game tightened up incredibly. The pressure turned to North County who could see the finish line with 8 overs remaining. A couple of run outs later and the tension was unbearable. Needing 20 off the last 8 overs , the target reduced to 15 off 5 overs. Still Phoenix battled on..another run out! Into the 19th over and North County needed 5 more to win. A close run out chance that would have sent the crowd into raptures was given not out and North County fell over the line with the last ball of the 19th over.

The disappointment was clear to see-but the guys held their heads high when the crown roared their appreciation. The team on the day was Adam Chester, Suraj Tirapati, Glen Foran, Eoin Cleere, Rory Anders, Craig Nicholson, Dev Dismore,Rahul Shah, Ben White,Calum Gillespie and Jeff Panama.

Under 9’s

Our first ever blitz takes place Sunday 8th June at 10am at the Civil Service grounds with teams from Leinster, Rush, CYM, and Malahide all playing. There’s a BBQ afterwards at the Phoenix Pavilions about 2pm while the 4XI show us how it’s done!

Under 11B’s

The seasons kicked off on Friday 2nd may with a narrow loss to CYM but our performance was a sign of things to come for this group as they followed it up with 50 run wins against The Hills and Railway Union.

While it’s hard to mention everyone Charlie Martin was on his first ever hatrick last weekend (This is his first season to play cricket) whilst Glen Foran played everything with a straight bat to help guide the team to victory. Jamie Cussin also playing his first year at Phoenix was very tidy behind the wickets and also bowled with lightening speed! A special mention goes to Evan Chester (eight last weekend) who has the makings of a fine all-rounder scoring runs and keeping the opposition quite with very economical bowling!

Under 11A’s

This group are unbeaten this season with wins against Railway Union, a nerve wrecking 3 win run against Clontarf and a comprehensive 50 run win against YMCA last weekend.

The standard of cricket on this team is very high. Opening bats Suraj and Adam are averaging 35 for the first wicket, while lower down the order Dev Dismore and Ben White are sending opposing fielders to the boundary with some big hitting. Our bowlers are being supported ably in the field lead by Jeff Panama and Adam Chester who already have 5 catches this season and three run outs to their names. Opposing batters are finding Craig Nicholson unplayable (3 for 6 runs vs. Clontarf and 9 wickets so far this year) whilst Eoin Cleere, Rory Ander and Hugh McCullough and the rest of the bowlers have all got handfuls of wickets. A special mention here for Stuart Boyd behind the stumps for some courageous wicket keeping as the lads fire the bowl down!

Under 13

The Under 13A’s have played one game so far winning against The Hills comprehensively.

The Under 13B’s have had narrow losses to Malahide, Merrion and Rush. Whilst the team hasn’t won their performances have been better than results indicate with good performances in the field. The batters have yet to come to the fore but with the assistance of Kirk Edwards and David Langford Smith along with their managers Jim and Pete – wins are around the corner.
