Munster Reds V Phoenix

31 Aug 08

With Phoenix’s outside chance of promotion depending on a reversal of the side’s poor away form the long trip to Cork to meet the league’s bottom side appeared the more likely of the two remaining fixtures to produce a positive result. In the absence of Conliffe, Dickeson, Wardell and Masud Ahmed there were places in the side for Cavanagh, Neill and a first team debut for Bhatia. After a long delay due to water on the bowler’s run up it was agreed that there would be 39 overs per side. Phoenix won the toss and inserted the home team.

The illustrious hyphen and the big Scot opened the bowling for Phoenix. Although Langford-Smith treaded warily early on, Russell and Martin were unable to reach 3 runs per over. After 10 overs Kelly and Ancher came on in their place and Ancher removed Russell in the 16th over with a slip catch by Captain Flanagan. Williamson increased the scoring rate for the home team although they suffered a setback when Martin and Duggan fell to consecutive deliveries from the skipper who had brought himself on to replace Kelly. Neill was a bit more expensive than the others but he did defeat the defences of Willis and Langford-Smith chipped in by bowling Williamson.

With Extras reaching 32 Phoenix were set a target of 165 to win. The skipper was again dismissed early on as the home side appeared to have a more formidable bowling attack than they had brought to Dublin earlier in the season. Mitchell negotiated his first 20 balls safely but then fell to Burchill and Edwards was joined by Ancher. The big Barbadian made a useful 24 but his dismissal was followed immediately by the exit of Langford-Smith with Willis bowling both. Graham Flanagan batted steadily for 15 but Phoenix always looked to be behind the run rate until Ancher and Kelly managed to profit from 2 poor overs by J. Duggan. Kelly’s dismissal by Koch left Phoenix at 117 for 6 and when Ancher got 14 in 1 over there were 32 runs required off 24 balls. Then Koch demolished the remaining batsmen by bowling Plunkett-Cole, Ancher and Cavanagh and getting an lbw decision against Bhatia. Phoenix lost by 30 runs. Man of the Match: G Ancher 68 runs

Phoenix v Pembroke

09 Aug 08

Captain Flanagan’s side for this key away match saw Stephen Neill come back in place of Masud Ahmed. The skipper won the toss and inserted the home team.

Cooke got into double figures early on but lost his wicket to Langford-Smith. Francis and Balbirnie were both adhesive and they added 75 before Francis missed a straight ball from Neill. Balbirnie batted on with Lawson until his dismissal by Conliffe for 49 from 103 balls. McDonnell, Lawson and Extras got Pembroke over 200 with Ancher and Kelly also picking up wickets for Phoenix. It looked as if Phoenix would have an interesting chase when the weather intervened and the match was abandoned around 5.30 with Phoenix unable to bat and the points shared at 8 each.Man of the Match: 5 bowlers took 1 wicket each with the illustrious hyphen the most economical  ( 2.00 runs per over )

Phoenix v Pembroke

2nd August 08

Robert Mitchell returned to his opening spot in the batting order with Matt Plunkett-Cole retaining a place in the side but down at No. 9. Graham Flanagan was the wicket keeper. His elder brother won the toss and chose to bat. The skipper struck a nice boundary off Francis but his innings was ended emphatically by Bill Whaley. Mitchell made 7 before being caught and bowled by Francis and Ancher failed to score before he was also removed by Francis. Edwards and Langford-Smith added 14 before the rain came and a further 26 after they came back with the match reduced to 41 overs per side. Dickeson was in big hitting form with three sixes and three fours and Graham Flanagan made a steady 17. Conor Kelly scored 12 from 12 balls, Plunkett-Cole made 10 and Conliffe and Masud Ahmed added 36 in an unbroken stand for the 10th wicket.

Defending an adjusted score of 187 Captain Flanagan replaced Conliffe with Ancher after 2 overs. Early on Extras passed the total of 8 reached in the Phoenix innings and the openers had added 50 before Langford-Smith got an lbw decision against Balbirnie. After Langford-Smith was rested Kelly bowled 5 overs for 12 runs and Edwards 4 overs for 14 runs. Ancher’s spell ended with 2 wickets both courtesy of catches by an in form Dickeson. The real golden arm for Phoenix proved to be the skipper himself after he replaced Ancher. He dismissed Francis, Lawson, O’Rourke, Byrne and Hopkins and from as early as 100 for 4 the visiting manager/scorer began to fear the worst. Masud Ahmed took the 9th wicket and although Garth hit a four and a six off Langford-Smith the illustrious hyphen had the last laugh when Edwards held the final catch.

Phoenix Men of the Match C Dickeson: 41 runs, 3 catches. R Flanagan: 5 wickets for 30 runs

Phoenix v Merrion

27th July 2008, 20:20 Semi Final

Masud Ahmed returned to the side at the expense of Edo De Jongh for this 20:20 semi final. Captain Flanagan lost the toss and Phoenix were in the field.

Anderson lasted only 3 balls before being removed by Conliffe but the innings progressed steadily with Joyce getting 15 and Petrie 16. The real damage done to the Section A side’s batting line up was by Garth Ancher who took 6 wickets for 27 ( including 6 wides ) in 4 overs. Barker was run out for 22 and Masud Ahmed and Langford-Smith took 1 wicket each. Merrion were all out for 134.

Captain Flanagan and David Langford-Smith made only 2 and 6 respectively but a stand of 51 in 19 minutes between Edwards and Dickeson kept Phoenix in the running. Dickeson may have had some doubts about the eventual outcome after he saw a hat trick at the other end as Edwards, Ancher and Graham Flanagan were all dismissed by Patel. However, he would have been reassured by a steady innings from Conor Kelly and a 60 partnership ended with Dickeson out and Phoenix needing 5 runs to tie and go through to the final. But Masud Ahmed was unable to get Anderson away. The batsmen conferred and a single left Kelly on strike with 2 balls left. Kelly went for the big hit and was caught and when Plunkett-Cole failed to connect with the final delivery Phoenix had lost by 3 runs. Conliffe and Neill were the batsmen not used.

Men of the Match: G Ancher 6 wickets ; C Dickeson 63 runs

Phoenix v CYM

26 July 2008

Langford-Smith and Neill returned to the side for this fixture as Masud Ahmed, Wardell and Cavanagh were dropping out for various reasons. On a sunny day Captain Flanagan lost the toss and Phoenix were in the field.

McDonald and Moore put on 34 at a steady rate but it was the second wicket partnership of 139 which may have had Phoenix worried. McDonald was eventually out for a patient 59 and Vaughan did well to reach 82. Coetzee scored 39 from 30 balls but lost partners regularly as only Launders of the others got into double figures. But with 33 extras Phoenix were left with a target of 244. The skipper and Kelly took 2 wickets each with Langford-Smith and Conliffe taking 1 each.

Captain Flanagan continued his improvement with the bat with a steady 20 from 45 balls but when he was out Plunkett-Cole, Edwards and Ancher had contributed a combined total of 10. When Dickeson was next out for 14 Phoenix were 46 for 5 and in dire straits. Langford-Smith and Graham Flanagan steadied the ship and assumed control until Flanagan was bowled by Lax with the total on 173. The illustrious hyphen was the top scorer for Phoenix with 75 but when he also fell to Lax there were still 52 runs needed. Conor Kelly and Paddy Conliffe added a quick 23 but when Kelly was caught at deep midwicket for 20 and then De Jongh was run out after he had apparently taken the running agreement with Conliffe too literally it was down to the last pair. Conliffe and Stephen Neill held their nerves to bring the scores level. Then Neill’s shot went in the air but it crossed the boundary unimpeded to win the match by 1 wicket with 1 ball to spare. Man of The Match D Langford-Smith 75 runs 1 wicket

Phoenix v UCT

24 July 2008

This 20:20 match played on a Thursday evening gave Captain Flanagan and his team an opportunity to warm up for the big day at Pembroke. Conliffe declared himself available and returned to the side and there were also rare first team opportunities for Gargya and Farooq. The illustrious hyphen was hors de combat and was engaged in an unusual role for him of umpiring.

Phoenix were in the field first and the skipper gave most of his fielders a bowl bar Ancher and Plunkett-Cole. Edwards took 2 wickets and there was 1 for Dickeson ( a collector’s item ) and 1 for Captain Flanagan. The visiting batsmen performed respectably with Ramjan hitting 23, Kamran 35 not out, Faisal 33 and Imran 13. With wides costing 2 each Extras totalled 38.

Needing 149 to win Captain Flanagan opened with Dickeson but the skipper fell quickly to Intiab. Dickeson made 15 and Edwards carried the torch with 8 boundaries in an innings of 39. However, Ancher, Kelly and Plunkett-Cole disappointed before there was a slight recovery by Graham Flanagan and Paddy Conliffe. At 91 for 7 in the fading light De Jongh joined Flanagan at the crease. This pair timed their acceleration of the scoring rate nicely with the Dutchman scoring 21 not out from 20 balls and the Irishman hitting a six off the last ball when just a single was required. Phoenix won by 3 wickets.

Man of the match G Flanagan 43 not out 1 catch

The visitors handed out mementos of their Irish tour to various members of Phoenix with Michael “Gower” Fanagan missing out as he was absent.

YMCA V Phoenix

19 July 2008

There were several changes to the Phoenix line up for this latest away match. Mitchell, Langford-Smith, Neill, Gargya, McDonald and Kumar were replaced by Plunkett-Cole, Dickeson, Masud Ahmed, De Jongh, Wardell and Cavanagh but overall the side was a bowler light. Again Captain Flanagan won the toss and chose to bat first.

The skipper made a slightly improved 13 before he fell to E Ahmed and Plunkett-Cole acquitted himself adequately on what the score book provisionally indicated was his first team debut. He survived an eyeball to eyeball confrontation with the home wicket keeper after one prolonged but unsuccessful appeal. Edwards had to bear a lot of responsibility for keeping the scoreboard going as Plunkett-Cole was followed by short innings from Ancher, Dickeson and Kelly and the big Barbadian’s partnership with Graham Flanagan saw him pass 50 before he was run out. Masud Ahmed batted sensibly at No. 8 with 31 from 40 balls and De Jongh and Cavanagh both made 6 with the big Scot striking what was for him a rare boundary. Wardell was undefeated on 14 but the final total of 186 was disappointing.

The home side’s chase got off to a bad start when Cavanagh removed McCoy and Minch. Ancher got rid of Alan Lewis. Wilson-Moore and Dunk added 30 but were dismissed by consecutive deliveries from Conor Kelly and Captain Flanagan. Thus former Phoenix stalwarts Beacroft and Nandi found themselves together at the crease with the score on 54 for 5. This pair who had taken 1 wicket each in the Phoenix innings stuck to their task in determined fashion and brought the home side back into the game with a stand of 81 in 78 minutes. Beacroft struck one six and five fours in his innings of 38 but when he was out YMCA still needed 52 to win. Nandi and Ahmed pushed the score along nicely and when Edwards removed Ahmed YMCA were still favourites to get the remaining runs. However, the dismissal of Nandi and Armstrong by Captain Flanagan gave Phoenix a chance and the tension mounted as Edwards prepared to bowl the last over. The home side secured victory when Harte hit two boundaries from the first two deliveries.

Phoenix v Railway Union

12th July 2008

Missing Dickeson, Conliffe and Wardell it was possible to argue that Phoenix were not at full strength for this key promotion clash but Captain Flanagan felt that his side had a point to prove after their Antalis Cup exit to the same opposition. In a late change Vipul Gargya was called up to replace the unavailable Masud Ahmed. Once more the skipper borrowed a coin and won the toss and he chose to bat.

The skipper’s opening stand with Mitchell realised 19 runs before Copeland dismissed him for 6 and Edwards and Mitchell added a further 21 before Mitchell was run out. Lacking his usual fluency Ancher struck only one boundary and Langford-Smith arrived at the crease with the score on 57 for 3. The big Barbadian and the illustrious hyphen proceeded to hold sway while they were together and added 119 runs in 121 minutes including 2 stoppages for rain. However, the fall of Edwards in the 42nd over opened up an end for Railway as the new batsmen could not delay to play themselves in. Graham Flanagan hit a boundary but in keeping Phoenix below 200 the bowlers probably won this phase of the innings. Chasing an adjusted target of 198 in 49 overs Railway suffered an immediate setback when international Kenny Carroll was caught and bowled off the second ball by Langford-Smith. However, Fisher and Johnston were able to keep the scoreboard going despite whatever Langford-Smith, Ancher and Captain Flanagan could do with the ball. At 60 for 1 Railway looked comfortable. The skipper made a breakthrough by dismissing Fisher and when Conor Kelly removed Copeland with his first delivery there was a sense that the game was on. However, when the skipper had bowled his full allocation and rested Kelly with the score on 96 for 3 the other bowlers were unable to keep the scoring rate down. In fact Phoenix failed to take any further wickets as Johnston ended on 112 not out and Mullen reached a deserved 51 not out from the final ball of the day which was bowled by Mitchell.

Phoenix performances of note Batsmen: K Edwards 79; D Langford-Smith 57. Bowlers: C Kelly 1-18; R Flanagan 1-29

Phoenix v Old Belvedere

29th June 2008

Phoenix needed a win in this key home game to put a dent in the visiting side’s promotion hopes. The weather came good and although the teams were off for 12 minutes early on the game was played to a conclusion. Captain Flanagan won the toss and batted first. The skipper and partner Mitchell added 58 for the first wicket. Mitchell made 17 before losing his wicket to Ankur who later removed the skipper for 41. The others who followed all got a start with Ancher, Dickeson and Langford-Smith in double figures but it was late in the innings when Conor Kelly got to 47 and Graham Flanagan hit a nice six. With extras reaching 30 the visitors were set a target of 212 to win.

After a nice tea it was down to business as Langford-Smith and Ancher opened the bowling for Phoenix. Ancher proved a little expensive but at the other end the former international managed to take the first wicket with umpire Parnell giving Kumar out lbw. Simi Singh and Dutt progressed quickly to 73 for 1 and the chase was well on but with Kelly bowling Dutt and Mitchell taking a fine catch to remove Singh for only 50 (he had hit 141 against Phoenix 3 weeks previously) the chase went into terminal decline. Captain Flanagan took the wickets of Yogesh and Monty Singh and finished with 2 for 30 from his 10 overs but the day belonged to Conor Kelly who accounted for Calder, Razza and SRK Singh to bring his haul to 5. Masud Ahmed made up for his duck by taking less than an over to dismiss both O’Donnells for 0. The visitors managed to reduce the margin to 90 runs and thus took 1 point home with them. After their blip on the season’s first weekend Phoenix have now won 3 consecutive home games.

Man of the Match: Conor Kelly 47 runs, 5 wickets

CYM v Phoenix

15th June 2008

After their victory over North County Phoenix were hoping to get their league campaign back on track at Terenure. The home side won the toss and batted first but with the score at 12 for 2 after 6 overs they were losing the early exchanges. Langford-Smith and Ancher took 1 wicket each. Langford-Smith was rested after 6 overs but Ancher bowled his allocation in one go and ended with 1 for 37. Vaughan and Hoey added 32 for CYM and then came Coetzee who had yet to make a big score. However, this time he made a vital 71 and had big partnerships with Vaughan and later Morgan. Captain Flanagan finished with 1 for 54 from his 10 overs. Masud Ahmed did a good containing job with 0 for 28. Langford-Smith and Kelly picked up a flurry of late wickets as the last 4 fell for 5 runs. However, the skipper might rue Edwards spell of 0 for 36 from 3 overs.

Phoenix needed 226 to win without Dickeson and Conliffe in the middle order but still had to be confident. Flanagan and Mitchell moved the score steadily to 30 but were both bowled by Hoey who proved a golden arm at second change for the home team. Ancher and Edwards added 38 before the big Barbadian was lbw to Brennan for 17. At drinks Phoenix were 77 for 3 with Langford-Smith just in. An exciting run chase seemed imminent with 149 needed off 150 balls and 7 wickets in hand. The score had reached 117 when the illustrious hyphen lost his wicket with Hoey once more the successful bowler. There was a loud cheer from the home fans as they sensed the possibility of victory. Ancher and Kelly added a quick 30 before the Irishman fell to Launders but when Masud Ahmed was bowled by Coetzee Phoenix were still 71 short with less than 10 overs to go.

Enter Dutchman Edo de Jongh and some runs were added. Then in one big over Ancher got after Coetzee with 23 runs from 5 balls as de Jongh picked up a vital single in the middle. Phoenix were back in it with 36 needed off the last 7. Then Brennan bowled Ancher to make it 201 for 7. Graham Flanagan was caught off the bowling of Launders. De Jongh and Wardell looked good and added 8 but then a disappointing run out brought Kumar to the crease. De Jongh and Kumar added 7 and needed 9 off the last 2 overs with Kumar on strike. Unfortunately he was caught at long off to the delight of the home fans. Phoenix lost by 8 runs. Man of the Match: G Ancher 87 runs 1 wicket

Phoenix v North County

12th June 2008,  20:20

After the mauling at Cabra, Phoenix looked forward to this 20:20 fixture more with hope than confidence. Robert Mitchell returned to the side who have had a lean run in recent years against the formidable Balrothery men. However, Langford-Smith bowled O’Connor 2nd ball and in the next over Ancher trapped Dara Armstrong. Opener Shields and Strydom then added 64 runs in 30 minutes although Kop leader John Doran later lamented Strydom’s reluctance to take singles. Conor Armstrong and Murphy both fell to Masud and Neill was expensive but managed to get Lawrence. Ancher came back to take 2 late wickets and Graham Flanagan emerged with a catch and a stumping. The last pair were undefeated but they added only 1 run.

Needing 136 to win Captain Flanagan opened with David Langford-Smith. After a few dot balls the World Cup star managed some big hits and the skipper produced 2 boundaries and 2 maximums. This pair added 50 in 20 minutes. Things slowed down a little with Edwards figuring in partnerships with Flanagan and Dickeson. Ancher made 8 and Kelly failed to add any runs to his 2 catches and it was Masud Ahmed who joined Dickeson at 93 for 5. There was an anxious moment for the home support when Masud could have been caught but this pair produced a winning stand of 46 runs in 18 minutes to see Phoenix home by 5 wickets. Dickeson was 25 not out and Masud 23 not out.

Phoenix Man of the Match:  A good team effort overall but Masud shades the scorer’s verdict with 23 not out and 3 wickets for an economical 13 runs.

Old Belvedere V Phoenix

June 7th

Phoenix arrived at the Cabra Oval for this second league fixture with high hopes on a sunny day. Opening bat Robert Mitchell was unavailable and Garth Ancher took his place in the side. Captain Flanagan won the toss and inserted the home team deciding that it would suit Phoenix to chase.

There was some concern when David Langford-Smith seemed to pick the wrong end to bowl from but then there was early success when Ancher caught and bowled Kumar to make it 6 for 1. Dutt and Singh batted steadily to leave the score 36 for 1 after 10 overs. The skipper was unable to bowl himself and he now introduced Kelly and Edwards to the attack. This pair was not as devastating as against Munster with Kelly finishing on 0 for 40 and after a second spell late in the innings Edwards had 2 for 66. Masud Ahmed, Conliffe and Neill all proved expensive with Langford-Smith taking 3 wickets late on as the home team surged towards 300. Some sharp half chances went down in the field and Phoenix were made to pay for this.

The skipper chose Masud Ahmed as his opening partner as Phoenix set off needing 291 to win. However, the Bangladeshi did not get off the mark before departing the wicket. Now came Phoenix’s best spell of the day as Flanagan and Edwards added 79 runs in 59 minutes to set it up nicely for the rest of the batting order. However, when Edwards played on and Ancher was given out first ball Phoenix’s fortunes were on a downward path. The next over saw the loss of both the skipper and Dickeson, the number 5. Langford-Smith and Kelly rallied briefly with a stand of 38 runs in 21 minutes but after this the innings petered out with Wardell undefeated on 6. Phoenix lost by 144 runs and so did not take any bonus points. Phoenix men of the match were Langford-Smith, 3 wickets and 31 runs and Edwards, 46 runs and 2 wickets.

Phoenix v Munster Reds

June 2nd

After a day off on Sunday, Phoenix were back in action on Monday with this first fixture of the 2008 league campaign. Captain Flanagan had already decided that most of Saturday’s team would retain their places but Manu Kumar lost out as the legendary hyphen David Langford-Smith returned to the side.

The skipper won the toss and decided to bat first but may have regretted his decision as he was again dismissed without scoring. Kirk Edwards was next in and he must have pleased his supporters with an innings which mixed attacking and defensive strokes on Colm Byrne’s fine track. The big Barbadian saw Mitchell and Masud Ahmed walk back to the pavilion and then reached his 50 with Langford-Smith at the crease. However, when both of these gents were out the innings was wobbling on 97 for 5. Dickeson and Kelly were soon parted but Dickeson and Conliffe then added 56 and the visitors were left to rue dropping Neill as he went on to help Phoenix pass 200 in the last over. Wardell made 3 and McDonald was undefeated on 3 while Dickeson top scored with 55.

Needing 206 to win Munster Reds were short 3 or 4 first choice players. The top order found Langford-Smith in a rich vein of form and he took a wicket in his second, third and fourth over. At the other end the skipper kept faith with fellow legal eagle, Patrick Conliffe, who ended with a respectable economy rate of 3.4 runs per over. Willis and Kulkarni achieved a temporary parity with the bowling attack and their stand added 33 but after Willis was bowled by Edwards the innings subsided. Edwards and Kelly proved too good for what was left of the batting line up. There was a nice moment when last man Philip Russell pushed Edwards into the offside to get off the mark (thus outscoring his opener offspring) but the innings concluded when he was bowled by Kelly. The Phoenix catching was generally good and with 25 points in the bank Langford-Smith could probably forgive Masud for putting one down. Munster Reds were all out for 53, Kelly taking 4 wickets and Edwards 3.  Phoenix Man of the Match: Kirk Edwards  51 runs, 3 wickets, 1 catch. Runner up: Corey Dickeson 55 runs

Railway Union v Phoenix

May 31st

Phoenix had a 4 week break after their opening 3 defeats before this Antalis Cup match. Garth Ancher and Graham Flanagan were unavailable and Thomas De Wet and Vipul Gargya were also left out. Unfortunately the team were also without the services of David Langford-Smith. The illustrious hyphen’s return from injury was a key factor in saving the side from relegation in 2005 although his subsequent spell with Ireland coincided with a decline in Phoenix’s fortunes. Masud Ahmed, Stephen Neill, Conor Kelly and Manu Kumar were back in the side.

The skipper won the toss and batted but sadly was back in the pavilion without scoring. He was the first of a number of partners that opener Robert Mitchell outlasted without necessarily outscoring. Indeed the team were in serious difficulty when Patrick Conliffe arrived at the crease with the score on 30 for 4. The innings stabilised at this point with Patrick contributing 18 runs to a partnership of 55. Robert was out shortly after having faced 128 balls for 46 and it was left to Corey Dickeson to marshall the tail. Neill, McDonald and Kumar scored a combined total of 5 runs out of 33 and it was 2003 skipper Wardell who ended undefeated on 6 in a last wicket partnership of 37. Dickeson was top scorer with 59.

Defending 162 runs in 60 overs was always going to be a difficult task for Phoenix but the result was in little doubt after 8 overs with Railway more than halfway home on 84 for 0. Conliffe, Kelly and McDonald were all put to the sword and the skipper settled on Edwards and himself as the attack although the big Barbadian’s first 2 overs cost 22 runs. Edwards did not take any wickets and the skipper finished as the only wicket taker for Phoenix with a reasonable economy rate of 4.1 per over. Kenny Carroll fell 5 short of a century as Railway wrapped it up in the 25th over. Phoenix men of the match were Dickeson (59 runs), Mitchell (46 runs) and Flanagan (4 wickets).

Phoenix v Rush
28 April 2008

Phoenix won the toss and elected to bowl, but a good opening partnership by Rush only being broken by a run-out, who was the highest wicket taker of the day with 3 of Rush's batsmen and 2 of the home side falling to this method of dismissal. Rush amassed 194 for 9 in their allotted overs with Daan Van Zyl scoring 62, Sadat Gul 49 not out and Conor Mullen 31. In reply the opening bat and captain Rory Flanagan made 54 before seizing up from cramp, which meant he was unable to get to a good delivery.  He was assisted by some spirited resistance towards the end of their innings from Conliffe 21 and Flanagan 28.
Sadat Gul took 3 - 22 as Phoenix fell 25 short leaving Rush the winners.
